What is butterfly clicking?

Butterfly clicking is a technique where you alternate two fingers (usually the index and middle) on the same mouse button, so each finger clicks in turn and you double your clicks. It reaches between 12 and 20 CPS, above jitter clicking and with less forearm strain. It is very popular in Minecraft PvP. Its weak point is that some games may register unwanted double clicks if the mouse bounces, so a steady rhythm is key.

How to butterfly click

  • Rest your index and middle finger on the same button and alternate presses at a steady rhythm
  • Aim for a regular rhythm rather than maximum force: butterfly rewards cadence, not power
  • A mouse with fast-resetting switches avoids dropped presses between fingers
  • Watch for accidental double clicks: if the mouse bounces, slow the rhythm slightly so every press counts
