Monitor and Display Tests

A brand-new monitor comes with a clock attached: the return window is the only stretch of time in which a faulty panel stops being your problem. Start with the faults you cannot fix. A full-screen dead pixel test, cycling through solid colour backgrounds, exposes subpixels stuck on or off; the backlight bleed test and the screen uniformity test reveal light leaking from the corners and the uneven patches a panel shows on flat grey. Run all three in a completely dark room, and only after the monitor has been on for ten or fifteen minutes, since leakage looks different on a cold panel. Photograph anything you find, because that photo is your evidence with the seller.

Once the panel passes, tuning begins, and this is where a real competitive edge lives. Gamma, black level, brightness and contrast decide how much detail you pick out in the dark corners of a game: the difference between spotting a crouched silhouette in an unlit corridor and taking the shot yourself. Run these under the ambient light you actually game in rather than in the dark, and in this order: gamma first, then black level and brightness, and finally contrast and colour. The burn-in test belongs in your periodic routine if you own an OLED. Keep one limit in mind: every one of these is a visual perception test carried out with your own eyes. They are excellent at exposing defects and getting a display sensibly configured, but they do not replace a colorimeter when you need absolute measurements or a calibration for professional colour work.

What order to run these tests in

Here the order is set by your return window, not by convenience. Warranty-covered defects take minutes to spot and come with a deadline; calibration can wait as long as you like. Test what might send the monitor back first, and leave the adjustments for afterwards.

  1. 01 Kill the lights and wait Do this in a dark room and give your eyes two minutes to adapt. With ambient light you will miss backlight bleed entirely and misjudge how deep the black level really is.
  2. 02 Dead pixels and bleed Start with what the warranty covers and what has a return deadline. If the panel arrived with dead pixels or heavy bleed, you want to know inside the return window, not a month later.
  3. 03 Uniformity and black level Move on to panel uniformity and full-screen black. This is where you see whether brightness drops towards the edges and how the panel handles dark game scenes.
  4. 04 Gamma, brightness, contrast Finish with calibration. Adjust gamma, brightness and contrast against the greyscale patterns until every step is distinguishable, without crushing shadows or blowing out highlights.

What is acceptable and what is not

Every manufacturer sets its own dead pixel policy, so check yours before filing a claim. This table gives you the general criteria for telling a genuine defect apart from normal panel behaviour.

Backlight bleed, uniformity and black level tests need a fully dark room, since any reflection hides the very flaw you are hunting. Gamma, brightness and contrast should be judged under the ambient light you normally game in. In every case, let the monitor warm up for about fifteen minutes first.

Do these tests replace a colorimeter calibration?

No. They are visual perception tests, so they depend on your eyes, your room lighting and your browser. They will find defects and get a monitor sensibly adjusted, but absolute colour measurements, delta E figures or ICC profiles require a hardware probe.
