Your KPS ceiling is rarely set by how fast one finger moves; it is set by how you spread the work across fingers and forearm. These are the four techniques people actually use, from the simplest to the most aggressive, with the KPS range you can expect from each.

How Your Keyboard Shapes Your KPS
N-key rollover and anti-ghosting decide how many keys your board can register at once. On cheap membrane keyboards the matrix shares lines between keys, so some simultaneous combinations get dropped or produce phantom presses. In a single-key KPS test you barely notice, but in four-lane osu!mania or any pattern that needs chords, a board without NKRO swallows real presses and your score drops through no fault of your technique. Switch type sets how much force and travel each press demands. Linear switches with a low actuation force and a short actuation point allow higher cadences than tactile or clicky ones, because there is no bump or click to push through on every repetition and the finger can rebound sooner. Hall effect and magnetic keyboards go further: actuation is analogue and adjustable, so you can drop the trigger point to fractions of a millimetre and enable rapid trigger, which resets the key the moment it starts rising. They are the fastest option currently available for chasing high KPS.
Polling rate defines how often the keyboard reports to the computer: every 8 milliseconds at 125 Hz, every millisecond at 1000 Hz. It does not change how many presses the system records, only when it sees them, and that delay stacks on top of firmware debounce and display response time. Can tapping very fast damage your keyboard or your hand?
The keyboard is mostly fine: mechanical switches are rated for tens of millions of actuations, so an intense session will not meaningfully shorten their life. Your hand is the real concern. Techniques built on sustained tension, such as forearm vibration, load the tendons and wrist and are the quickest route to an overuse injury.
