How the Test Works

The test listens to the movement events your browser receives while you drag the mouse and adds up the cursor displacement in pixels. You make two passes over the same physical distance, which is easiest if you pick a start point and an end point on the pad and stick to them, and the result is expressed as the percentage deviation between the slow swipe and the fast one. A deviation near zero means your system converts every millimetre of hand movement into the same number of pixels regardless of speed. There is an important limitation to understand before drawing conclusions. The browser sees pixels that the operating system has already processed, not the raw counts coming off the sensor: by the time the movement reaches a web page, Windows, macOS or your Linux desktop has already applied its own curves and scaling. That means the test reliably detects system acceleration, but it cannot separate it from acceleration built into the mouse firmware. If the number stays high after you have cleared every system option, the manufacturer's software is the next suspect. Your own gesture accuracy matters too. If the fast swipe does not cover exactly the same physical distance as the slow one, that human error shows up inside the measured deviation. Run the test three or four times and read the trend rather than trusting a single pass.

How to Read Your Result

The deviation compares the pixels travelled during the slow pass with those from the fast pass. Here are the usual bands and what each one means for your setup.

Tips for a Reliable Measurement

  • Pick a start point and an end point on the pad and honour them on both passes: the test only works if the physical distance is identical.
  • Make the slow swipe genuinely slow, over two or three seconds, and the fast one properly committed; similar speeds give the test nothing to detect.
  • Run the measurement at least three times and read the trend rather than the number from a single pass.
  • Close your manufacturer's software before testing if you suspect it is swapping profiles based on the foreground application.
  • Use long swipes of at least fifteen centimetres, because short gestures let human error swallow the result.
  • After changing any setting, run the test again to confirm the change actually took effect instead of assuming it did.

Frequently Asked Questions

What deviation counts as acceptable?

Anything under 15 % can be treated as linear, because the margin of error in your own swipe already accounts for that much. From 16 % upwards it is worth reviewing your settings, and above 30 % there is almost certainly a curve running in the system or the mouse.

Can the test tell me whether the acceleration comes from the mouse or the system?

No. The browser only receives pixels the operating system has already processed, so it sees the end result of the whole chain. What you can do is disable the system option, rerun the test and see whether the number drops; if it stays high, the source is the mouse firmware or its software.

Is having acceleration enabled always bad?

For multi-monitor desktop work it is genuinely convenient, letting you cross the screen with a short flick and then fine-tune slowly. For shooters it works against you, because the same physical movement no longer produces the same turn. Plenty of players keep separate profiles for each situation.

Does mouse DPI affect this test?

DPI changes how many pixels the cursor covers overall, but not the ratio between the slow and fast passes. Since the result is a percentage deviation, a high or low DPI does not alter the diagnosis as long as you do not change the setting mid-test.

Why do I get a different result each time I repeat the test?

Because your gesture accuracy varies. If the fast swipe covers slightly more or less physical distance than the slow one, that difference shows up in the percentage. Take several measurements back to back and use the middle value as your reference.
