Why Reaction Works Differently In Dota 2
A large share of Dota 2's decisive abilities are instant or nearly so. An Earthshaker who Blinks in and casts Fissure does not leave you a comfortable window: only a few tens of milliseconds pass between the hero materialising and the stun landing. Your raw score barely moves with training. What can shrink dramatically is the total time between something happening on screen and the game executing your command. That is where the real gains live.
- Cut your ping before anything else. Pick the nearest server, use a cable instead of wifi and close background downloads. Going from 90 ms to 30 ms hands you back 60 ms of effective reaction, more than months of training would.
- Set comfortable keybinds and enable quick cast on the abilities and items you need to be instant. A BKB on a key you reach without moving your hand fires far sooner than one you have to stretch a little finger for.
- Use a high refresh rate monitor if you can. Moving from 60 Hz to 144 Hz trims a few milliseconds of display latency and, more importantly, shows you the start of the enemy animation sooner.
- Warm up before queueing ranked. Ten minutes of unranked or demo mode is enough that your first real fight is not also your warm-up fight.
- Sleep. Sleep debt degrades reaction time more than any mouse or sensitivity tweak will ever fix.
- Glance at the minimap every few seconds and practise last hits and denies in demo mode. Both reduce the number of situations where you need fast reactions at all, which is by far the most profitable improvement available.
