A Grand Prix start is decided in under half a second. The five red lights come on one by one, then all go out together after a pause the race director deliberately varies between 0.2 and 3 seconds so nobody can anticipate it. That is the moment this test recreates: when the lights go out, click as fast as you can.

Why the start decides a race
Overtaking is hard in modern Formula 1: cars lose downforce in dirty air and genuine attacking opportunities are scarce. That makes the start one of the moments where most positions change hands, and a 50 ms difference on the clutch release can translate into several metres by the time the field reaches turn one.
The driver’s reaction is only part of the equation. A complete launch combines reacting to the lights, finding the clutch bite point, managing wheelspin and getting tyre temperature right. A driver with an excellent reaction can still lose places by spinning the wheels, and one with an average reaction can gain them with perfect traction.
The 0.1-second rule is what makes this test interesting: the FIA sets that threshold because the scientific literature holds that below it no reaction is possible, only anticipation. If your score drops under 100 ms repeatedly, you are almost certainly guessing the moment rather than reacting to it.
How to improve your reaction time off the line
Genetics set your floor, but most people can shave 20-50 ms with the right habits and setup:
- Do not try to anticipate lights out: drivers watch the lights without blinking and wait for the stimulus, because going early means a penalty.
- Sleep 7-9 hours: sleep deprivation can add 20-40 ms to your reaction time.
- Use a 144 Hz or faster monitor: a 60 Hz screen shows you the change 8-10 ms later on average.
- Always take five attempts and use the average, not your best single run — that is what actually reflects your level.
- Cut distractions and try it with headphones in silence: sustained attention is what varies most between attempts.
- Repeat the test at the same hour across several days and log the average, because your reaction shifts noticeably through the day.
