Measure how many milliseconds it takes you to respond to a stimulus, and find out what that number actually means on Summoner's Rift.

In League of Legends, reaction time almost never decides whether you land a shot, because there is no crosshair to track. What matters is how fast you respond to specific stimuli: a Blitzcrank hook flying out of a bush, a Thresh Death Sentence crossing the lane, an Enchanted Crystal Arrow appearing out of the fog of war. In each of those moments your brain has a couple of tenths of a second to decide whether to sidestep, pop Barrier, or spend Flash. That margin is your reaction time, and it is measured in milliseconds.

This test works exactly like the most common in-game stimulus: you wait for a signal whose timing you cannot predict, then respond as fast as you can. The global median for visual reaction with a click sits around 270 ms, so that is your reference point. Run several attempts in a row, throw away the first one (it is always the worst) and keep the average of at least five measurements. A single reading tells you very little, because trial-to-trial variation is typically 30 to 50 ms.

Why reaction time works differently in League of Legends

The concept that explains everything is the reaction window: the time between an ability becoming visible and the moment it hits you. Many skillshots cover their effective range in around 0.25 s or less, which is a shorter window than the average human reaction time. Add the time your hand needs to execute the movement and the conclusion is uncomfortable but true: at a high level those abilities are not dodged by reacting, they are dodged by prediction and positioning. You move unpredictably, you keep minions between you and the hook, and you respect the range of the threat.

The clearest example of pure reflex is the reactive Flash: seeing an ultimate start and leaving the area before it resolves. There, 50 ms decides an entire game. But there is a detail almost nobody accounts for: network latency adds directly to your effective reaction time. With a 220 ms reaction and 60 ms of ping, the server receives your input at 280 ms. Dropping your ping from 80 to 30 ms is, in practical terms, gaining 50 ms of reflexes without training anything. The same applies to your display: going from 60 Hz to 144 Hz shaves around 10 ms off the time it takes the image to appear.

And one factor outweighs all of the above: cognitive load. In LoL you are not reacting to a single stimulus on an empty screen. You are last-hitting, tracking enemy cooldowns, estimating where the jungler is and deciding whether to push the wave. Every one of those tasks steals attention and stretches your real response well beyond your test score. That is why checking the minimap every few seconds reduces the reaction you need far more than reflex training ever will: if you saw the enemy jungler cross the river, there is nothing left to react to, because you already backed off.

How to improve your reaction in League of Legends

The headroom on raw biological reflex is small, maybe 20 or 30 ms. Everything around the reflex, though, is far easier to cut: latency, hardware, habits and attention. Always start there.

  • Cut your ping first: ethernet instead of wifi, close background downloads and streams, and pick the closest server. Every millisecond of latency is added straight onto your effective reaction.
  • Play on a high refresh rate monitor, 144 Hz or above, and turn off TV image enhancements or cinema modes, which quietly add processing lag.
  • Bind Flash, Barrier and your defensive abilities to comfortable keys and enable smart cast. Removing the confirmation click saves tens of milliseconds on every single execution.
  • Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes before your first ranked game. A few waves in the practice tool or one normal game is enough to stop your first ranked from being your worst game of the day.
  • Sleep properly. Sleep deprivation is the single factor that measurably degrades reaction the most, ahead of caffeine, your mouse or your in-game settings.
  • Check the minimap every few seconds and practise dodging skillshots against bots in the practice tool. The first lets you anticipate instead of react; the second makes the correct movement automatic so you no longer have to think about it.
