What is the CS2 crosshair and how does it affect aim?

The crosshair in CS2 is fully customizable via console commands. The most important settings are size (cl_crosshairsize), gap (cl_crosshairgap), thickness (cl_crosshairthickness) and opacity (cl_crosshairalpha). A smaller, static crosshair (cl_crosshairstyle 4) is preferred by most pros for better crosshair placement visibility.

CS2 Crosshair Parameters Explained

The generator writes the same console commands the game itself uses. Every control maps to one specific setting, so knowing what each one changes lets you tune the crosshair deliberately instead of dragging sliders and hoping for the best.

ParameterWhat it doesRecommended value
Style (cl_crosshairstyle)Sets whether the crosshair stays fixed or expands as you move and fire. Classic styles animate; static styles keep the same shape at all times.0 to 5; most players use 4 (classic static)
Size (cl_crosshairsize)Length of each of the four lines. Higher values cover more screen and hide more of a target at mid range.Between 1 and 3; decimals accepted
Gap (cl_crosshairgap)Distance between the centre and where the lines begin. Negative values pull the lines inward and produce a very tight crosshair.-3 to 0 in most competitive setups
Thickness (cl_crosshairthickness)Line width in pixels. Affects visibility against bright surfaces and how much of an enemy head you obscure at range.0.5 to 1.5; 0.5 or 1 is standard
Centre dot (cl_crosshairdot)Adds a dot at the exact centre. Useful as a reference point, but it puts pixels exactly where you are aiming.0 off or 1 on; usually left off
Colour (cl_crosshaircolor)Picks one of the built-in colours or switches to custom mode so you can enter your own RGB values.0 to 4 for presets; 5 for custom RGB

Static or Dynamic: How to Decide

The real difference is what happens when you move. A dynamic crosshair opens up while you run or spray, whereas a static one keeps its exact dimensions no matter what. Competitive play runs almost entirely on static crosshairs, because the information the expansion provides (that your accuracy has dropped) is something an experienced player already predicts from the rhythm of the spray, while the animation adds visual noise at the worst possible moment.

At the top level, small crosshairs with a negative or near-zero gap dominate. The reason is practical: they cover far less of an enemy head at medium and long range, and they force you to place your aim properly instead of trusting that a target will land somewhere inside a large box. It feels unforgiving at first, but crosshair placement usually improves within a few weeks.

Colour matters more than people expect. Cyan and acid green stand out on virtually every map in the active pool because those hues barely appear in the environment textures. Red, by contrast, disappears against brick, rust, dark wood and a good share of fire and molotov effects. When in doubt, pick the tone that shows up least often in the maps you play most.

Practical Crosshair Tips

  • Test every change on an aim map or the range before taking it into a ranked match; a few rounds of flicks tell you enough.
  • Do not change your crosshair every week. Visual memory takes time to settle, and constant resets throw away the reference you already built.
  • Turn the outline on if you play bright maps full of sand and concrete; it separates the crosshair from the background without adding thickness.
  • Tune the gap before the size. The gap changes how the crosshair feels far more than line length does.
  • Copying a pro crosshair is a fine starting point and a poor destination; adapt it to your resolution and your own placement habits.
  • Check how it looks while scoped with the AWP, since a crosshair that works from the hip can be distracting at zoom.

CS2 Crosshair FAQ

How do I import a crosshair code in CS2?

Copy the code to your clipboard, open the game settings, go to the crosshair tab and press the import button. The game reads the code straight from the clipboard and applies every value at once.

What is cl_crosshairstyle and which value should I use?

It is the command that controls crosshair behaviour. Lower values correspond to dynamic styles that expand as you move, higher values to static ones. For competitive play a classic static style is the usual recommendation, since the shape never changes.

Why do professionals use such small crosshairs?

Because a minimal crosshair hides less of the target at range and forces more precise placement. Many high-level players run small static crosshairs for that reason rather than as a stylistic choice.

Does the crosshair actually affect my aim?

It does not improve your precision on its own, but it changes the information you receive. An oversized or animated crosshair covers the target and distracts you, while a clean, consistent one reduces visual noise and makes head-level placement easier to hold.

How is the crosshair saved between matches?

The configuration is tied to your account and syncs when you log in, so it follows you across machines. Even so, it is worth storing the code somewhere safe in case you reinstall or reset your settings.
