Rust Crosshair Settings
Native, documented by Facepunch and with a genuine import code
For years, running a custom crosshair in Rust meant reaching for external solutions. That is over: the system is NATIVE to the base game, needs no mods or plugins of any kind, and arrived with Facepunch's official Meta Shift update. It lives in the menu, works on any server and depends on nobody else.
Better still: Rust is by far the best documented of the six games we cover in this section, and it is documented by the developer itself. The styles, the slider ranges and the colour list are all published, so here you can read real numbers instead of guesses.
What can you customise?
You can pick between three base styles (Default, Dot and T-Shape), adjust dot size, spacing, line length and line width, choose the main colour from a closed list, enable an outline with its own colour, and switch on two dynamic behaviours: dynamic visibility, which hides the crosshair when you aim down an optic or carry no weapon, and dynamic spacing, which makes the centre gap change with your current accuracy. Rust also has an importable crosshair code, and it is official: an alphanumeric string you paste into the game's own import dialog. That dialog has a 50-character limit, so if you copy a code from elsewhere and it will not fit, the code is not valid for this system. We publish no example code on this page; what we do give you is the full parameter list so you can build your own.
Crosshair parameters
These are the menu controls. Since this is the best documented game of the group, several ranges are confirmed and we give them as they are; the ones that are not stay without a number.
| Setting | What it does | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Base shape of the crosshair: full cross, dot only, or a T shape with no top arm. | Default, Dot, T-Shape (verified) |
| Dot size | Diameter of the centre dot. At 0 it disappears and only the lines remain. | 0-5 (verified) |
| Spacing | Gap between the centre and where the lines start. The larger it is, the clearer your target stays. | 0-3 (verified) |
| Line length | Length of each arm from where the spacing ends outward. | Range not published |
| Line width | Thickness of those lines. More thickness buys visibility and costs visual precision. | Range not published |
| Main colour | Crosshair colour, chosen from a closed list of seven options. | white, green, blue, red, yellow, magenta, cyan (verified) |
| Outline (toggle and colour) | Adds a border around the crosshair and lets you pick its colour to separate it from the background. | Verified |
| Dynamic visibility | Automatically hides the crosshair when you aim down an optic or when no weapon is equipped. | Verified |
| Dynamic spacing | Makes the spacing open and close according to the weapon's accuracy at that moment. | Verified |
How to set up your crosshair step by step
- Open Settings from the game menu.
- Go to the User Interface section and find the Crosshair block.
- Pick a style from Default, Dot and T-Shape, then set dot size, spacing, line length and line width.
- Choose the main colour, enable the outline if you need it and decide whether you want dynamic visibility and dynamic spacing.
Tips for your Rust crosshair
- The T-Shape style keeps the top of your view clear, which is exactly where bullets climb under recoil. Worth trying even if you are used to a full cross.
- Dynamic spacing gives real information about weapon accuracy. If you tend to hold long sprays, it will tell you when to stop.
- Dynamic visibility stops your crosshair overlapping the reticle of a scope. If you play with optics, turn it on.
- The outline is what saves your crosshair over snow, sand and pale buildings. Seven colours plus an outline covers every biome.
- Remember the 50-character limit in the import dialog: if a code will not fit whole, it is not a valid Rust code.
Frequently asked questions
Does Rust's custom crosshair need mods?
No. It is a native feature of the base game, added in Facepunch's official Meta Shift update. No mod or plugin is required.
Does Rust have importable crosshair codes?
Yes, and they are official. They are alphanumeric strings you paste into the game's import dialog, which accepts a maximum of 50 characters.
Which crosshair styles are available?
Three: Default, Dot and T-Shape. Every other parameter is applied on top of whichever style you choose.
Which colours can I pick?
The list is closed: white, green, blue, red, yellow, magenta and cyan. On top of that you can enable an outline with its own colour.
